Beyond Recognition: What Being an IBM Champion Really Means

By Marcello Meneghel

Throughout my career, I have learned that technology is never just about products, platforms or lines of code. Above all, it is about people, knowledge and our ability to turn complex problems into solutions that make a meaningful difference.

My experience with the IBM ecosystem spans different generations of technology. I have seen architectures evolve, platforms change and ideas once considered definitive give way to new approaches.

One thing has remained constant: the importance of sharing what we know.

Recognition follows contribution

Being recognized as an IBM Champion makes me proud. But what that recognition means to me goes well beyond a title.

I see the IBM Champion community as a group of professionals who believe in contributing, sharing their experience and helping others grow.

That means taking part in technical discussions, questioning architectural decisions, sharing lessons learned and, above all, connecting technology with the challenges organizations actually face.

It does not mean endorsing a technology without reservation. It means understanding where it creates value, acknowledging its limitations and contributing to its evolution.

I believe a technology professional earns credibility in part through a willingness to ask difficult questions.

Experience becomes more valuable when it is shared

Working with critical enterprise environments teaches us some important lessons.

One is that modernization does not necessarily mean replacing everything that already exists.

Often, the harder task is understanding why earlier decisions were made, which dependencies must be preserved and how to move forward without putting the foundations of the business at risk.

Those lessons should not stay inside the projects where we learned them.

When we share our experience through articles, events, communities or technical conversations, we give other professionals the chance to learn from what worked—and from what did not.

That is how knowledge grows beyond the people who first acquired it.

Community means exchange, not just an audience

There is an important difference between publishing content and being part of a community.

Participating also requires a willingness to listen, learn, question and reconsider our own convictions.

That is one of the things I value most about the IBM ecosystem: the opportunity to exchange ideas with specialists, architects, developers and other professionals facing similar challenges, often in very different circumstances.

Those conversations broaden our perspective. They also remind us that nobody has all the answers.

After all these years working in technology, I am still learning.

I hope I never lose that willingness.

Sharing knowledge carries responsibility

When we discuss Enterprise Java, WebSphere, Liberty, enterprise integration or artificial intelligence applied to modernization, we are discussing decisions that can affect entire organizations.

Behind those technologies are operations, essential services, investments and people.

That is why I believe sharing technical knowledge carries a responsibility.

We need to look beyond trends and discuss consequences, architectural choices and long-term commitments.

Technology moves quickly. Our critical thinking needs to keep pace.

What does being an IBM Champion mean to me?

It means being part of something larger than my own career.

It means contributing to a community that has given me opportunities to learn, develop professionally and build connections over the years.

It means continuing to share experience, raise questions and help other professionals make better decisions.

Above all, it means remembering that knowledge is not something we accumulate only for ourselves.

It is something we build together and keep in circulation.

Ultimately, the real value of recognition lies not in the title we receive, but in the contribution we continue to make.
